New York Jets place former Alabama All-American on injured reserve

After missing the past five games because of a neck injury, New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley will miss at least four more.

“C.J. Mosley will go to IR today,” Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said on Friday afternoon. “A hard decision by a very prideful, amazing player, leader – all those things for us. Was not an easy decision for him, but it’s the best decision for him and our organization.”

By going on injured reserve, Mosley will have to spend at least four games on the sidelines, and with only five games remaining on New York’s regular-season schedule and the Jets at 3-9, it seems likely that the linebacker will not play again in 2024.

Mosley has had an injured-affected season. He played 63 defensive snaps and made nine tackles in New York’s opening game. But he has played 47 snaps in three games since then, sidelined for three full games by a toe injury.

After the season, the Jets could face a decision involving Mosley and his injury replacement, Jamien Sherwood. Sherwood leads New York with 107 tackles in 2024, and the former Auburn standout is scheduled to become a free agent in March.

In the final season of his contract in 2025, Mosley will count $12.784 million against the Jets’ salary cap. But releasing him would be even more expensive, with a $16.434 million cap hit.

Mosley joined New York as an NFL free agent in 2019 after five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Mosley was a Pro Bowl selection in four of his five seasons with Baltimore.

In his first season with the Jets, a groin injury limited Mosley to two games, and he chose to sit out the 2020 campaign under the NFL’s plan to play during the coronavirus pandemic.

From 2021 through 2023, Mosley played in all but one game and recorded 478 tackles, the fourth-most in the NFL during that three-season span.

Mosley was a two-time All-State linebacker for Theodore High School. In 2009, he earned the Class 6A Lineman of the Year Award and recognition as a Parade All-American.

At Alabama, Mosley was a consensus All-American in 2012 and a unanimous All-American in 2013, when he earned the SEC Defensive Player of the Year Award and the Butkus Award as the nation’s best linebacker. Mosley played for two national-championship teams with the Crimson Tide.

Mosley entered the NFL as the 17th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
