New Year’s Day 2023: What’s open what’s closed on Monday, Jan. 2? Banks, mail, Walmart, more
Jan. 1, 2023 fell on a Sunday this year, and, as a result, many businesses and government offices are observing the holiday on Monday, Jan. 2. This change means it won’t be business as usual on Jan. 2.
New Year’s Day on Jan. 2 is the first federal and state holiday of the year. The next federal holiday will come Monday, Jan. 16 to celebrate the birth of Martin Luther King Jr.
Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed on Jan. 2:
Federal offices – Closed
State offices – Closed
City and county offices – Most closed
U.S. Post Office – Closed, no mail will ruin Monday, Jan. 2. Self-service kiosks are still available at some locations for drop-offs.
UPS, Fed Ex – There will be no regular UPS pickup or delivery service, except for UPS Critical. FedEx delivery services will operate as usual, except for FedEx Freight and FedEx Express.
Banks – Many banks will be closed on Jan. 2.
Financial markets – The New York Stock Exchange will observe New Year’s Day on Monday, Jan. 2 and will be closed. Nasdaq trading and bond markets also will be closed.
Grocery stores – Most open regular hours. Shoppers should check with their local stores for specific hours.
Restaurants – Many local and chain restaurants should be open on Monday, Jan. 2, if you want to grab some takeout. McDonald’s and Starbucks should be open and operating at regular business hours, but check ahead for specific hours.
Retail stores – Most will be open regular hours, including Walmart and Target.
