“Sweet Home Alabama” is back in the spotlight, courtesy of a new version of the Southern rock classic by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Ronnie Dunn — a powerhouse country singer and one half of the duo Brooks & Dunn — teamed with former Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle for the cover of “Sweet Home Alabama,” released on Friday, Oct. 20. (Listen to their version in the video above.)

The release date coincided with the 46th anniversary of a plane crash that decimated Skynyrd, killing six people including the band’s lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant. Skynyrd reformed a decade later, carrying on a Southern rock tradition that has lasted to this day. Pyle, who survived the crash, joined the reunited Skynyrd in 1987 and left four years later. He continues to record and perform as a solo artist.

Pyle, 75, plans to release a tribute album, “Anthems – Honoring the Music of Lynyrd Skynyrd,” on Feb. 2, via Get Joe Records and BFD/Orchard. Thirteen tracks are on the agenda, most of them iconic Skynyrd tunes such as “Free Bird” (featuring Dolly Parton), “Simple Man” (featuring Sammy Hagar), “Call Me the Breeze” (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus), “What’s Your Name” (featuring LOCASH) and “Gimme Three Steps” (featuring Marty Raybon, an Alabama native and lead singer of Shenandoah).

Parton also covers “Free Bird” on her upcoming “Rockstar” album, which appears to be the same version included on Pyle’s album.

During a recent appearance on “Huckabee,” the TV show hosted by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (which airs on TBN), Pyle said he especially wanted to honor the Van Zant’s talents and contributions as a singer-songwriter.

“Ronnie didn’t just write hit songs and hit albums, he wrote anthems that are part of the fabric of our lives,” Pyle said. “And these songs will be around a thousand years from now … We had an idea about doing a tribute record to Ronnie Van Zant, his music and his band, and put a little polish with some new vocals and some modern technology.”
