After nearly six months, New Orleans’ Audubon Aquarium will reopen to the public June 8, with visitors getting their first look at the $41 million in renovations.

According to NOLA.com, the aquarium at the foot of Canal Street on the New Orleans riverfront will feature changes including a new 2,500-square-foot lobby enclosed with a glass curtain wall (bird friendly, of course). Gone is the IMAX theatre, replaced by the insectarium, including the butterfly garden.

A major component of the renovations was relocating the butterfly garden and insectarium, which previously were located a few blocks away at the U.S. Customs House and had been closed since 2020.

“Having two popular attractions in one location will provide guests with a one-of-a-kind opportunity as it is the only facility in the world to house both an aquarium and an insectarium under one roof,” Audubon spokesperson Melissa Lee told NOLA.com.

Other changes include upgrades to the Mississippi River Gallery and Top of the Gulf Experience. Parakeet Point has been replaced with an Amazon Rainforest Gallery, where 15 different species of birds fly freely.
