New Orleans area teen woke up angry, shot and killed mom and dog, sheriff says

A 19-year-old New Orleans resident told investigators he woke up angry and then shot his mother and her dog while they slept, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Johnathan Payne Kliebert called 911 about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, telling a sheriff’s dispatcher he had just shot and killed his mother inside their home. He also said he was at a hospital, waiting to turn himself in.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the hospital and located Kliebert in the parking lot, while others went to the home on Sisters Road in Ponchatoula, north of New Orleans, where they located the body of 46-year-old Ashley Kliebert in the master bedroom, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Located nearby was Ashley Kliebert’s dog, also dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Investigators interviewed Johnathan Kliebert, who said he “awoke in an angry state,” before using a shotgun to kill his mother and the dog, who were both asleep on the bed.

Kliebert is in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, charged with 1st-degree murder, armed robbery, cruelty to animals, and aggravated crimes against nature.
