New online retailer beats out Amazon and Walmart, becomes most downloaded US app: report

A new online shopping platform has replaced Amazon and Walmart as the most downloaded shopping app.

CNN reports Temu, pronounced “tee-moo,” is a Boston-based online retailer that shares the same owner at Chinese social commerce giant Pinduoduo. The app soared to the top of the charts after a 30-second Super Bowl commercial featuring the tagline, “Shop Like a Billionaire.”

The app runs an online store for a variety of products ranging from home goods to electronics to appliances.

“Through the largest stage possible, we want to share with our consumers that they can shop with a sense of freedom because of the price we offer,” a Temu spokesperson said to CNN in a statement.

The app was launched last year by PDD and, since September, it’s been downloaded 24 million times, racking up more than 11 million monthly active users.
