New Jimmy Buffett album featuring Paul McCartney, other stars on way

An album of new material from the late Jimmy Buffett is due out in early November, featuring luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Paul McCartney, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Will Kimbrough.

Buffett’s label, Mailboat Records, working in conjunction with Sun Records, will release “Equal Strain on All Parts” on Nov. 3. Three songs can be heard now on popular streaming services: “Like My Dog,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In” and “Bubbles Up.”

Buffett, who was born in coastal Mississippi and grew up in Mobile, died Sept. 1 after a four-year battle with an aggressive skin cancer. His passing makes “Bubbles Up” that much more poignant: The title is taken from a SCUBA-diving term that reminds novice divers how to reorient themselves when they’ve lost their equilibrium and their bearings:

“Bubbles up/ They will point you toward home/ no matter how deep or how far you roam/ They will show you the surface/ the plot and the purpose/ So, when the journey gets long/ Just know that you are loved/ there is light up above/ And the joy is always enough/ Bubbles up.”

The song was co-written by Will Kimbrough, a Mobile native who has regularly collaborated with Buffett in the studio and on stage over the last 15 years or so. McCartney was among the first to single it out in the wake of Buffett’s passing, saying it was both a great song and his favorite vocal performance ever by Buffett.

“He turned a diving phrase that is used to train people underwater into a metaphor for life when you’re confused and don’t know where you are just follow the bubbles — they’ll take you up to the surface and straighten you out right away,” McCartney posted on Facebook after Buffett’s death. “So long, Jim. You are a very special man and friend and it was a great privilege to get to know you and love you. Bubbles up, my friend.”

Rolling Stone also has taken note: “With a melody that recalls a country hymnal, it offers a reassuring message about finding direction in life and a chorus that takes on new meaning given Buffett’s passing,” wrote David Browne.

Kimbrough also can be seen playing guitar in a “behind the scenes” video about the recording sessions for “My Gummie Just Kicked In.” That song is a much lighter romp inspired by an anecdote from dinner party between the Buffetts and the McCartneys. As explained by Mailboat Records, McCartney’s wife, Nancy Shevell, stumbled and shrugged it off with a joking remark that her gummie had just kicked in. Buffett and McCartney ran with the idea of someone enjoying the impact of a (presumably) THC-laced candy.
