New festival in Alabama to celebrate Italian food, music and culture

If you love Italian food, music and culture, you’ll have a chance to indulge in all three at a new festival in Alabama.

Festa Italiana, organized by the Italian America Heritage Society of Birmingham, is in the works for June 15, 2024, at Sloss Furnaces, 20 32nd St. North. According to the event website, Festa Italiana aims to “encourage, promote and preserve Italian culture and heritage with activities centered upon Italian traditions, foods, language culture, history, religion, folklore, customs, celebrations, music and family.”

Details haven’t been announced and there’s no word yet on an entertainment schedule, specific food vendors or ticket prices. However, the festival website mentions bocce competitions, cooking demos, dancing, grape stomping and wine and cheese tastings, along with live music and authentic food.

The Italian American Heritage Society, a nonprofit organization, has been recruiting vendors and volunteers for Festa Italiana, according to its website and Facebook page. Hours listed for the festival are 3 p.m.-10 p.m.

Birmingham has seen other events showcasing Italian food and culture, including the Feast of St. Mark Italian Festival at Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7340 Cahaba Valley Road. An event called Festa Italiana was planned at Linn Park in 2015, but that festival was postponed from its original date of May 16, and it’s unclear if it ever took place.

Daphne has a food festival called Festa Italiana, typically held in March at Christ the King Catholic Church.
