New England Patriots to discipline Javon Baker after traffic-ticket tirade
New England wide receiver Javon Baker will be disciplined for his Instagram Live rant on Sunday after getting a traffic ticket, but he remains on course to make his NFL debut in the Patriots’ season-opening game on Sunday, coach Jerod Mayo said.
“There is a penalty, but not to the level of missing a game,” Mayo said on Monday.
Baker filled two-and-a-half minutes on Instagram Live with an expletive-dotted expression of exasperation after, he said, getting ticketed while dropping off someone at the airport.
“These police officers in Massachusetts, they some hating-ass police officers,” Baker said.
Mayo said Baker’s video “in no way represents what the organization is about, in no way represents what we are about as a team or how Javon needs to go out there and represent himself. We’ve handled it internally. We had a great conversation, and I think it’s a combination of just immaturity and realizing the grand scheme. We’re on a big stage here, and you can’t do those things. As far as our relationship with law enforcement, I think it’s outstanding, and we’ll continue to strengthen that relationship going forward.”
New England will kick off its season against the Cincinnati Bengals at noon CDT Sunday at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.
Baker joined the Patriots in the fourth round of the NFL Draft on April 27. Baker had five receptions for 56 yards in New England’s three preseason games.
Baker played at Alabama in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, when he had nine receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown. Baker’s TD was the first touchdown pass of current Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe’s career – a 24-yarder during Alabama’s 63-14 victory over Southern Miss on Sept. 25, 2021.
Playing for former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn at UCF, Baker had 108 receptions for 1,935 yards and 12 touchdowns in the past two seasons.
