New details emerge after NASCAR star Chase Elliott injured in snowboarding accident
Chase Elliott won’t be behind the wheel Sunday for NASCAR’s Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas, and there is no timetable for his return to driving.
That’s the latest update after the 27-year-old suffered a snowboarding accident Friday in Colorado. According to multiple reports, Elliott underwent successful surgery on his left leg Friday night. He reportedly suffered a fractured tibia in the leg.
“Chase did go through a successful surgery last night that lasted about three hours,” Hendrick team president Jeff Andrews said. “He’s doing well. At this point in time, we would expect this obviously to be several weeks. But beyond that, I don’t have a timeline to offer you.”
Josh Berry is slated to work the wheel in the No. 9 car until Elliott can return.
Elliott is one of the most successful drivers in the sport. He was the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion and was the regular-season champion in 2022.
“We’re going to race a long time together with Chase Elliott, and we’re going to win a lot more races together,” Andrews said. “It’s certainly a little bit of a setback and obviously Chase is very disappointed, but again I want to reiterate that the most important thing is Chase’s health.”
Elliott was coming off a second-place finish at the Pala Casino 400 last week in California. He was 14th in points after the first two races.
