New book out Tuesday from N.K. Jemisin, author with Mobile ties

“The World We Make,” the latest science-fiction novel from N.K. Jemisin, an award-winning author with Alabama ties, is out Tuesday.

Jemisin was born in Iowa but spent a portion of her youth in Mobile, where friends included W. Kamau Bell, a cousin. According to a New Yorker profile, the two future stars “bonded over the fact that we felt like aliens in Mobile,” in Jemisin’s words. She has said her relationship with Mobile was uneasy: Her split life, spending part of her time in Brooklyn and part in Mobile, enhanced her awareness of the city’s racial division, and the lynching of Michael Donald occurred when she was in the fourth grade.

Jemisin has risen to an extremely respected position among science fiction and fantasy authors, while championing (and creating) work that addresses race in a more honest and holistic way than those genres usually have. The lack of inclusivity, and the need for more Black characters and writers, is something she addressed in a landmark essay, titled “How Long ‘Til Black Future Month?”

The novels of her “Inheritance” won the Hugo Award for best novel in 2016, 2017 and 2018, making her the first author ever to win the award three years in a row, or for each book of a trilogy. In 2020 she won a fourth Hugo, for the novelette “Emergency Skin,” and was among the creators honored with a MacArthur Fellows Program “Genius Grant.”

More recently she wrote “Far Sector,” a DC comic series starring a black woman wielding the power of the Green Lantern. In September it won the Hugo for best comic.

“The World We Make,” by N.K. Jemison, is a sequel to her novel “The City We Became.”Hachette

In Jemisin’s 2020 novel “The City We Became,” a diverse cast of characters suddenly find themselves empowered as avatars of the boroughs of New York City. They are challenged to defend the city, itself a living entity, against a supernatural attacker. Numerous reviewers have described it as a love letter to New York.

The new sequel, “The World We Make,” is described by publisher Orbit as “the final book in the Great Cities duology.” The premise: “A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and ‘law and order’ may change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside. New York City’s human avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world to defeat him and protect their world from complete destruction.”

“The World We Make” is available from Hachette Book Group as an ebook, hardcover or audiobook. It also is available through bookstores and online retailers.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, Jemisin is due to hold a discussion of the book with actor LeVar Burton, presented as a free streaming event by the New York Public Library. For more information or to register for the free event, go to www.showclix.com/event/worldwemake.
