A new barbecue restaurant from a veteran Alabama pitmaster will open early next week in Birmingham’s Pepper Place district.

The restaurant, Burning Tree Smokehouse, opens Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 230 31st Street South, about a block east of Blueprint on 3rd and Hop City Beer & Wine.

Warren Webster, who worked for Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q for more than three decades, is the owner-operator at Burning Tree Smokehouse. Luis Gomez is the general manager.

The menu features brisket, pork, turkey and ribs, as well as sandwiches, tacos and plates. Among the sides are collard greens, coleslaw, mac and cheese, fries and barbecue beans.

Hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Burning Tree Smokehouse is affiliated with the Fresh Hospitality Group’s Fatback Pig Project, a premium pork farm, processing plant and distribution center in the Morgan County town of Eva, near Decatur.

The Fresh Hospitality Group’s portfolio also includes Taziki’s Mediterranean Café, Martin’s Bar-B-Q Joint, Biscuit Love and Big Bad Breakfast.

The Fatback Pig Project is opening a second processing plant in Birmingham next month in the space that adjoins Burning Tree Smokehouse, Webster says. The restaurant is a spinoff of that, he explains.

“We are doing a processing plant next door, and we realized we had too much space, so we decided to build a barbecue restaurant here,” Webster tells AL.com. “We all come from a barbecue background. I’ve been at Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q for 35 years.”

The space includes indoor dining, patio seating and an upper deck.

The Birmingham location of Burning Tree Smokehouse is the first, Webster adds, but there may be others.

“We’re going to start with this one, and if this one goes well, we will be doing another one,” he says.
