Nearly half of Robertsdale High students absent after unsubstantiated shooting threat

Robertsdale High School was put on lockdown Tuesday after the school received what the principal said was an unsubstantiated phone threat to “shoot up the school” which police ultimately found was from an out-of-state location.

While there was no credible threat or lockdown Wednesday, there wasn’t much of a student body, either, with nearly half — 48% — of the school’s enrollment of 1,508 absent, according to WKRG.

The lockdown Tuesday almost certainly played a role, but a screenshot of a threatening social media post from 2022 which started making the rounds again by Wednesday morning likely prompted parents to keep kids home Wednesday, as well.

Robertsdale police also said another photo circulating on social media showing what appears to be a student walking next to a Robertsdale police officer was not a current photo and wholly unrelated to Tuesday’s events.

All of the rumors, gossip and misinformation surrounding Tuesday’s threat prompted both Robertsdale police and principal William White to post statements to Facebook page, with White encouraging parents and students to “not participate” in the spread of rumors and misinformation.

The police statement explains school lockdown procedures and encourages parents to “trust in credible reporting agencies” and to “be calm and trust in local law enforcement.”

“We worry and stress about the safety of your children just as much as you do,” the statement reads, in part. “We are humans, we are parents, we are husbands and wives. Our children go to the same schools that yours do. All the same concerns that you have, we have.

“Please take comfort in knowing that we will do everything in our power to plan, prepare and protect our children.”

Investigators also say the suspect who made Tuesday’s threatening call is believed to be out-of-state and police are working with federal agencies to apprehend the suspect. Robertsdale police said a heavy police presence is being maintained at area schools.
