NE Regional girls: Hewitt-Trussville advances past Huntsville

Simply making it to the playoffs is no longer sufficient for the Hewitt-Trussville girls’ basketball team.

They want the hardware and the glory that comes at the end of the season.

“Being here is not enough anymore,” junior Jordan Hunter said.

The fifth-ranked Huskies rolled to a 56-30 victory over Huntsville in Wednesday’s Class 7A Northeast Regional semifinal at Jacksonville State’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Hewitt-Trussville (26-6) jumped out to a 12-4 lead after the opening frame, holding the Panthers to 1-of-5 from the field and 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. Both teams matched baskets in the second period, only two made field goals from each team, and the Huskies took a 17-9 lead into the halftime break.

Opening the second half, Hewitt-Trussville held the Panthers to 3-of-11 in the third period and outscored them 13-6 en route to a 30-15 lead heading into the final stanza. The Huskies shot more than twice that of their opponent in the frame and were a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line.

Huntsville (17-14) scored 15 points in the final frame to match its total from the first three periods combined. The Panthers went 4-for-8 from the field in the fourth period and were 6-of-9 at the charity stripe.

Coachspeak: “Our ball movement wasn’t where it need to be tonight. We adjusted defensively at halftime and that allowed us to get some key stops. We wanted to play a little faster. We got some turnovers (in the second half) and the offense started clicking. We had to get the ball moving more than in the first half.” — Hewitt-Trussville’s Tonya Hunter

“We knew they were a very talented guard-based team coming in. The longer we could hold possession and make them defend, it would give us a better chance. The flow of the game was going to where we could have a chance, but shots were not falling.” — Huntsville’s Jeff Smith

They said it: “Our team goal is to finish.” — Benson

“Whatever it takes (to win a state title), we’re willing to do it.” — Hooks

What’s next? Hewitt-Trussville advances to the Northeast Regional final, where they’ll face Sparkman, Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Jacksonville State’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.
