NCAA tournament snubs: Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Clemson among those left out

The full 2023 NCAA tournament field is set, but a few notable teams were left on the outside looking in.

Among those is Vanderbilt, which reached the SEC tournament semifinals before losing to Texas A&M. The Commodores are just 20-14 overall and 81st in the NCAA’s NET rankings, but have five wins over “Quad 1″ competition.

Nevertheless, Vanderbilt is staying home, as are such highly successful programs as North Carolina, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Oregon. The Tar Heels were ranked No. 1 in the preseason after returning four starters from last season’s NCAA tournament runner-up team, but posted a 20-13 record and managed just one “Quad 1″ win all season.

Clemson (23-10) looked like a solid bet at one time to make the field of 68, but finished just on the outside with a NET ranking of 60. Rutgers has a NET ranking of 40, but is also not in the tournament with an overall record of 19-14.

Also out are Wisconsin, Michigan, and Oregon — all of which have been in the Final Four in the last decade. Also not in the field is Oklahoma State, with six Final Four trips in its history.
