The nation’s largest private company, which operates a plant in Alabama, is cutting its workforce by 5%.

Cargill, a Minnesota-based food production company that distributes meat, grains and farm products globally, has 160,000 employees around the world. That means layoffs could impact roughly 8,000 workers total.

The company has a crush plant in Guntersville, according to its website. As of Friday, the Alabama Department of Commerce had not published a public notice of any layoffs in the state as a result of Cargill’s workforce reduction.

A Cargill spokesperson declined to comment on how many layoffs might impact the company’s operations in Alabama, but said that the impacts will be minimal.

“To strengthen Cargill’s impact, we must realign our talent and resources to align with our strategy,” the company said in a statement to AL.com. “This difficult decision was not made lightly. We will lean on our core value of putting people first as we support our colleagues during this transition.”
