Nate Oats provides injury updates after Alabama’s blowout loss at Florida
Alabama basketball got a break Tuesday night as guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. returned from a concussion. But in a cruel bit of irony, the Tide may have lost another guard to injury.
With 4:15 remaining, trailing Florida by 20 points, Rylan Griffen collided with a Gator and stayed down. Head coach Nate Oats, who wasn’t thrilled with the field goal disparity postgame, was issued a technical foul for arguing the lack of a call.
“(Griffen) has got a calf injury. We’re gonna get an MRI on it in the morning. I’m not sure what, if it’s a strain or something. I thought he got hit, knocked down. They thought it was a loose ball and both guys were going for it,” Oats said.
Griffen scored three points on 1 for 4 shooting with four rebounds and a steal in 25 minutes (minus 18, a team-worst). He didn’t appear to put much weight on his right leg as he was helped off the floor.
No. 16 Alabama (20-10, 12-5 SEC) lost its first back-to-back conference games in two years, 105-87. He was replaced by Sam Walters, who fouled out.
With Wrightsell still working his way back from a concussion revealed after UA’s win over Florida last week, Alabama found a boost from freshman guard Davin Cosby and Walters, though the pair combined for four points on 2 for 9 shooting against the Gators. Both will need to be better on Saturday against Arkansas and in the upcoming conference tournament if Alabama wants to make a run.
“He made a good step in the right direction. We’re getting him some game reps, trying to get him back in game shape so he can play more and more moving forward,” Oats said.
Wrightsell finished with two points in eight minutes, all in the first half. Griffen entered Tuesday averaging 26.3 minutes and 9.0 points per game, second- and fifth-most respectively on the roster.
