Nate Oats: ‘I don’t know’ if Brandon Miller’s situation will cost him awards

Nate Oats is “proud of the week” Brandon Miller had, but no, Oats doesn’t think his star freshman was snubbed on Monday.

Oats was asked about Miller’s absence from the Southeastern Conference’s player of the week awards during his Tuesday press conference. Notably, the SEC notably didn’t honor Miller following a 65-point showing across two games, including a last-minute winner at South Carolina.

The SEC’s freshmen accolade went to Arkansas guard Nick Smith Jr., who scored 50 points, 24 against Alabama on Saturday. The overall player award went to Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiewbe, who shot 87% from the floor in the Wildcats’ two contests.

Oats referenced the high-level play across the SEC as a potential reason why Miller wasn’t selected, citing its two close wins compared to Kentucky’s resume-boosting victories at Florida and Auburn. But Oats didn’t know if the scandal following Miller — Tuscaloosa investigators revealed Miller drove a gun and would-be murder weapon to former teammate Darius Miles on Jan. 15 — could impact any potential postseason accolades.

“That’s a really good question. Obviously, he had a great week. We’re proud of the week he had. He was able to focus a lot. The two guys that got the awards, Oscar had a great week too. … Our team hasn’t played as well maybe as we needed to. Nick Smith’s coming off injury and played well. Look, here’s the deal, in our league in the SEC, they got to make tough decisions every week. There was great, great players who won the award. Brandon’s had a good week, I’m sure he’ll get awards moving forward. We’ll address that as it comes up. I don’t know the answer to the second part of that,” Oats said.

Nate Oats: ‘I feel like we’re due for a good game’ with Auburn next for Tide

Alabama retains No. 2 ranking before Auburn comes to Tuscaloosa

Miller is averaging 19.7 points per game for No. 2 Alabama with a 46.8 field-goal percentage and a 42.4% rate from 3-point territory. He’s been named the SEC freshmen of the week six prior times, tying a program record. Miller faced a hostile crowd in South Carolina last Wednesday, hearing chants of “guilty” while he attempted free throws. He was cheered loudly on Saturday against Arkansas, leaving the Tide on the doorstep of a sole-possession regular-season SEC title.

A former five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American, Miller has risen up draft boards as the postseason nears. More than a dozen NBA scouts were present to watch Miller score 24 points against the Gamecocks. While UA and police have cleared Miller of any wrongdoing, some speculation has been cast on Miller’s future.

Two recent mock drafts released Tuesday, by Yahoo Sports and The Athletic, respectively, still predict a scenario where Miller would be the third player selected in this summer’s NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. One scout told Yahoo’s Krysten Peek that teams will continue to evaluate Miller “as he continues to play and no charges are brought.”

Oats shared a similar thought when asked on Feb. 21 about Miller’s status.

“I’m sure NBA scouts will ask. They do their homework,” Oats said, “… (NBA scouts) are comfortable with everything that happened there.”
