Nate Oats: Alabama considering redshirt for freshman Kris Parker

Alabama basketball guard Kris Parker may not see the Coleman Coliseum court this year in real-game action. The Tide freshman is in the “process” of potentially redshirting, head coach Nate Oats announced Monday.

Parker was ruled out of UA’s season-opening win with an eye injury, according to multiple reports. A former four-star recruit, he didn’t appear against Morehead State or Indiana State last Friday.

“We’re in the process of talking about possibly redshirting Kris. Just to get stronger, get better at some things. I think he’s got a chance to be really good. I just, you know, we’re at that point in the process that he had the injury, he’s healed from the injury, he’s practicing. We’re in the process of talking through that right now.”

Parker was ranked as the No. 10 prospect in Florida in the class of 2023, per Rivals. He averaged 24.8 points and 14.2 rebounds per game at Crossroad Academy, which won its district title in Class 2A last winter. Parker is listed on Alabama’s roster as a 6-foot-9 guard weighing 195 pounds.

Oats has mentioned repeatedly throughout the start of the season that Alabama’s rotation will be whittled down eventually. The Tide is attempting to sort its best defensive lineups to pair with its offensive talent. The other scholarship guards on the roster include transfers Aaron Estrada and Latrell Wrightsell Jr., senior Mark Sears and underclassmen Rylan Griffen and Davin Cosby Jr.

The No. 22 Tide (2-0) host South Alabama on Tuesday and Mercer on Friday.
