Napoleon Bracy endorses Shomari Figures in Democratic runoff
State Rep. Napoleon Bracy Jr., who finished third in the Democratic primary in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, has endorsed former U.S. Justice Department official Shomari Figures of Mobile in the runoff.
“As the state representative of communities in this District for more than a decade now, I know the type of leadership District 2 and the voters who live here deserve and need. Shomari Figures is that leader, and I’m proud to endorse him for Congress,” Bracy said in a press release.
Figures faces House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels of Huntsville in the April 16 runoff.
Figures led the 11-candidate field in the March 5 primary with 24,825 votes, or 43%. Daniels finished second with 12,774 votes, or 22%.
Bracy has represented a Mobile County district in the Legislature since 2010.
“It’s no secret that there are many issues facing this new District, from healthcare and education to jobs and gun violence,” Bracy said. “Shomari is the only candidate in this race who has worked in Washington in all three branches of federal government, he is the only Democrat who lives in our District, and I believe he is the candidate who can move our party forward and win in November.”
Figures is a Mobile native who worked in the Obama administration and as deputy chief of staff and counselor to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. He is the son of longtime state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures and Michael Figures, a state senator who died in 1996.
On Saturday, Figures received the endorsement of the Alabama Democratic Conference.
Daniels has represented a Huntsville-area district in the Alabama House since 2014. He has been House minority leader since 2017. Daniels grew up in Bullock County and said he maintains deep ties in the 2nd District.
Sen. Merika Coleman, who finished fourth in the primary, endorsed Daniels on Tuesday.
