Mushroom-based product recalled after illnesses in 20 states, including Alabama
A brand of mushroom-based products like chocolates, gummies and ice cream cones, are being recalled after cases of severe illnesses in states, including Alabama, have been reported.
Diamond Shruumz products, which can be purchased online and at a variety of stores – mostly retailers that sell hemp-derived products such as cannabidiol (CBD) or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC) – have been linked to 39 illnesses and 23 hospitalizations nationwide since June 11.
People who have consumed the products have reportedly experienced seizures, agitation, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rates, and hyper/hypotension, according to the FDA.
Several patients have required intubation, mechanical ventilation, and admission to an intensive care unit. Cases have been reported in 20 states, including Alabama.
The FDA recall notice states that illnesses are likely caused by Muscimol, a chemical found in mushrooms.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mushroom-containing products have been marketed for promoting health, improving focus and increasing energy. Advertising often also implies that consumption “would lead to feelings of euphoria, hallucinations, or psychedelic effects.”
Diamond Shruumz labels contain the term ‘microdosing’; however, the company’s website states that its products don’t contain psychedelic substances and lists ingredients such as lion’s mane and ashwagandha.
The FDA recommends that consumers who have purchased Diamond Shruumz products stop using the product, destroy it, and contact Prophet Premium Blends via phone at (209) 314-0881 or email at [email protected] with their order number to initiate a refund.
