Muscle Shoals uses 2nd-half rally to beat Fort Payne

Cole Woods threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as Muscle Shoals rallied to beat Fort Payne 41-10 on Friday in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

The Trojans (11-0) trailed 7-6 at halftime but dominated the second half at J.F. Moore Stadium in Muscle Shoals. Fourth-ranked Muscle Shoals (11-0) advances to host No. 2 Clay-Chalkville (11-0) in next week’s third round.

Woods connected with Jamir Goodloe for two scores, a 63-yarder on the Trojans’ first play and a 29-yarder in the third quarter. He added a 9-yard touchdown run in the third.

Tarre Hampton added touchdown runs of 3 and 34 yards in the fourth quarter. Jaquess Greene capped the scoring with a 13-yard run.

Kaden Dubose scored on a 1-yard run for Fort Payne (7-5) in the first quarter. Conner Hughes kicked a 29-yard field goal for the Wildcats in the third.

“I thought in the first half we kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” Muscle Shoals coach Scott Basden said. “And then we had a lineman downfield on a long pass to the tight end, (which) got called back. And then the last possession, we get it down on the 1 and don’t score. And then we fumbled one out of the end zone (for a touchback). And so you take all those into account, we just kept stopping ourselves.

“I thought the second half we eliminated all those mistakes. We were able to break open a good lead. Hats off to Fort Payne because they were causing us those problems. I think they’re well-coached, and their kids played extremely hard.”

When asked about his halftime message to his players, he said it was simple. “Didn’t make any adjustments. Just told them we get the ball first and it’s up to them if they want to continue to play next week. That’s it,” Basden said.

Key sequence: The Trojans started the second half on their 20 and marched 80 yards in four plays, capped by Woods’ 29-yard pass to Goodloe. Jorge Garcia’s extra point put Muscle Shoals up 13-7.
