Murder of beloved Alabama youth coach killed while helping stranded motorist unsolved after 4 years

It’s been more than four years since a Good Samaritan was shot to death in Phenix City, and police aren’t giving up on finding his killer.

Lamar Dontaye Whittaker, 35, was trying to help a stranded motorist when, investigators say, he was shot in an apparent case of mistaken identity.

The shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. that Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, near 10th Avenue South and Fourth Place South in Phenix City.

Officers found Whittaker lying on against a curb next to a broken-down vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told police that a man walked up to the vehicle, fired several shots at Whittaker, then ran away. Police later learned that Whittaker was not the intended target.

Whittaker was a beloved youth football and baseball coach in Columbus. He left behind a son.

Central Alabama Crime Stoppers in 2021 announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to Whittaker’s killer. The reward still stands.
