Multiple rounds of severe weather possible this week
Parts of Alabama will face the prospect of severe weather for at least the next three days, according to forecasters.
Tornadoes aren’t in the forecast for this week, but severe thunderstorms are, and they could pack a punch, with winds strong enough to topple trees and down power lines. Large hail and deadly lightning will also be in the mix.
The storms could also bring a lot of rain to Alabama. Some parts of the state could end the week with 5 or more inches of rain, according to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center.
Here is the rainfall outlook for the next seven days:
Multiple rounds of rain and storms will be possible through the week as several weather systems move through the region, according to the National Weather Service.
The stormy pattern expected this week follows an active Sunday night in Alabama, with multiple severe storms reported and lots of trees reported down in the Birmingham metro area and other parts of north and central Alabama.
More of that will be possible today, but this time in the southern part of Alabama, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Parts of south Alabama, especially southwest Alabama, have a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather today. (See the map at the top of this post.)
A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.
Rain and strong storms continued in that part of Alabama on Monday morning, and more will be possible this afternoon as well as a weak front stalls out in the area, according to the National Weather Service.
No severe weather is expected for the northern half of Alabama today, but that could change on Tuesday, according to forecasters.
The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 2 risk for severe weather for a large part of Alabama on Tuesday, which means that scattered severe storms will be possible again.
Here is the outlook for Tuesday:
Other parts of the state will have a Level 1 risk on Tuesday and could have to deal with isolated severe storms.
More of the same looks to be possible on Wednesday, with another Level 2 risk for a large part of Alabama.
Here is the outlook for Wednesday:
No severe weather is in the Storm Prediction Center’s forecast after Wednesday, but that could change with more storms expected on Thursday.
Things could briefly be a bit drier on Friday before rain enters the forecast again on Saturday.
