Mt. Vernon police chief jailed on domestic violence charge

The police chief of Mt. Vernon was arrested Friday and charged with domestic violence, according to police in Saraland, where the incident occurred.

Lt. Bryson McDaniel, public information officer for the Saraland Police Department, confirmed to AL.com that Mt. Vernon police chief Duncan Herrington had been charged with 3rd-degree domestic violence/harassment.

Herrington was arrested about 4 a.m. Friday on 1st Avenue in Saraland, where he resides. Police said Herrington was the aggressor in an incident involving himself and a family member.

McDaniel said Herrington was held for 24 hours in the Saraland jail before being released, as required under state law. Herrington posted bond, believed to have been $1,000, and was released Saturday morning.

A call to Mt. Vernon Mayor Eric Peoples went unanswered Monday.

3rd-degree domestic violence is a Class A misdemeanor in Alabama, punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $6,000.
