MRI reveals Auburn’s Johni Broome suffered non-surgical ankle sprain
An MRI revealed that Auburn men’s basketball’s All-American center, Johni Broome, suffered a non-surgical ankle sprain in Auburn’s 66-63 win over South Carolina on Saturday, according to a release from the university.
There was no timetable listed for his return.
The injury occurred after Broome jumped to contest a layup by South Carolina’s Collin Murray-Boyles, landing awkwardly on Chaney Johnson’s left foot and rolling his left ankle. Broome had to be helped off the floor, not putting any weight on his left foot.
After the game, Bruce Pearl used the words “significant” and “serious” to describe the sprain, but said Broome would get an MRI once he returned to Auburn for further evaluation.
“We’ll MRI it, X-ray it when he gets back and hopefully that’s what it is,” Pearl said referring to the sprain.
If Broome is out for an extended period, Chaney Johnson will likely move into the starting lineup at the four, with Dylan Cardwell remaining at the five.
“It’s gotta be the next man up,” Pearl said after the South Carolina win. “So, whether it be Dylan Cardwell or Chaney Johnson or Ja’Heim Hudson or Chris Moore — that’s our depth on the frontline.”
The schedule won’t let up for Auburn either. The Tigers have just two days to prepare for No. 14 Mississippi State before traveling to Athens to play a Georgia team that already has wins over Kentucky and Oklahoma.
Tuesday’s matchup with Mississippi State is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. and will be streaming live on SEC Network.
