Mr. Irrelevant signs his first NFL contract with Jets

Alabama safety Jaylen Key was the last player picked in the 2024 NFL Draft. But he didn’t have go to the end of the line to sign his first NFL contract.

The New York Jets announced the Mr. Irrelevant of this year’s draft signed his rookie contract on Monday along with five other players picked by the team, including Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu, the No. 11 selection.

As the 257th selection of the NFL Draft on April 27, Key got a four-year contract worth about $4.101 million.

Before playing for Alabama in 2023, Key spent five years at UAB and played in four seasons.

Among the other draft picks signing their first NFL contracts on Monday was Ole Miss defensive end Cedric Johnson, who was a prep standout at Davidson High School in Mobile.

Picked by the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 214, Johnson got a four-year contract worth about $4.158 million.

All drafted players receive four-year contracts.

The values of those contracts are based on the pick number, the NFL’s salary cap of $255.4 million for the 2024 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.
