Mountain Brook woman, 79, killed when tree fell on her apartment during storm identified

Authorities have released the name of a woman who was killed when a tree fell on her Mountain Brook apartment.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Suzanne Michael Wilson. She was 79.

She was the mother of Mike Wilson, the legendary Alabama pitmaster and founder of the Saw’s BBQ empire who died unexpectedly in 2020.

Wilson was inside her home at the small building on the corner of Petticoat Lane and Montevallo Road, in the heart of Mountain Brook Village, when the morning storms rolled through the Birmingham area.

The massive tree fell about 6:18 a.m. Monday.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Wilson was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:18 a.m.

Multiple friends and family members were outside the apartment, hugging and crying.

At least one other apartment was damaged, but no other injuries were reported.
