Mountain Brook routs Mortimer Jordan

Mountain Brook steamrolled to victory and clinched a playoff spot as the Class 6A, No. 8-ranked Spartans rolled to a 54-14 victory over Mortimer Jordan on Friday at Spartan Stadium.

Mountain Brook (6-2, 4-1) out-gained Mortimer Jordan on offense, 519 yards to 439, and forced three turnovers while collecting two sacks and four tackles for a loss.

Cole Gamble fumbled on the third play of the game, but the Spartans forced their own turnover four plays later and marched 73 yards in four plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard run from Jack King. Mountain Brook forced a missed field goal attempt on the next Mortimer Jordan possession and Gamble extended the lead to 14-0 with a 16-yard run on the third play of the second quarter.

The Blue Devils trimmed the deficit to 14-7 on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Ames to Sean Taylor, capping a 7-play, 80-yard drive that saw three false start penalties, but Gamble returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a score and a 21-7 lead. Drew Widener intercepted Ames on the next Mortimer Jordan drive, and Clark Sanderson took a jet sweep 69 yards for a score before King grabbed his second touchdown for a 35-7 lead at halftime.

Mortimer Jordan (6-2, 3-2) turned the ball over on downs on its first two possessions of the second half, sandwiching a 50-yard touchdown run from Gamble, and scored on a 73-yard touchdown run by Terence Gaines on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Spartans ground out a 13-play, 84-yard scoring drive to put the finishing touches on their playoff seed-clinching victory.

Playoff push: The Spartans clinched the second seed in Region 5, as Parker earned the regional title following Friday’s 41-7 victory over Minor. Parker defeated Mountain Brook last week. As the No. 2 seed, Mountain Brook will play its first-round playoff game at home.

Coachspeak: “It was impressive. We were anxious to get back on the field. When you have a game like we did last week, you wish you were playing on Monday. It’s been a long week waiting for it and glad our performance and effort didn’t ebb and flow. It seemed as though we had consistent, solid execution.” — Mountain Brook coach Chris Yeager, referring to last week’s loss to Parker.

Star of the game: Gamble. The senior running back finished with 16 carries for 201 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a 19-yard reception and a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Mountain Brook rushed for 359 yards on 35 carries, a 10.3-yard average.

“We kept it simple and played Mountain Brook football. The offensive line was incredible and we couldn’t have done it without their effort tonight,” Gamble said.

By the numbers: 6, consecutive incompletions by Mortimer Jordan to end the game and the number of plays Mountain Brook ran in the third quarter. …0, pass attempts for Mountain Brook in the second half, which ran the ball 21 times for 210 yards.

Stat sheet: Mountain Brook – Cooper finished 5-for-7 passing for 159 yards and a touchdown and added 18 yards on two rushing attempts, and Sanderson had four receptions for 140 yards and a score. King finished with 10 carries for 78 yards and a pair of scores, and sophomore Stuart Andrews had seven rushing attempts for 49 yards and a touchdown. Mortimer Jordan – Ames finished 9-of-26 passing for 158 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while adding 60 yards on 12 carries. Gaines had 24 carries for a game-high 209 rushing yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 18 yards. Coleman Maldonado had four receptions for 88 yards and Taylor had a 44-yard touchdown catch.

What’s next? Mountain Brook travels to Gardendale, while Mortimer Jordan returns home to host Jackson-Olin.
