Mountain Brook names successor to retiring longtime city manager
Mountain Brook officials have named a successor for its retiring city manager position.
Finance Director Steve Boone, who has worked for the city for more than 30 years, will replace Sam Gaston.
Gaston, hired in 1993, announced last month that he plans to retire in November.
Since 1996, Boone has served as the city’s assistant city manager and finance director. He also served as city clerk from 2001 to 2021.
A UAB graduate, Boone has degrees in accounting and management and an MBA.
Mayor Stewart Welch said replacing Gaston “was never going to be easy, but I am confident that we have made the right decision by promoting Steve to fill this role.”
“Steve has been an integral part of city operations for decades, and we know he has the experience and expertise to ensure that Mountain Brook remains the gold standard for local governance and management,” Welch said.
City Council President Virginia Carruthers Smith said Boone “does not need on the job training.”
“His intimate knowledge of city operations and our community will quickly pay dividends for the residents of Mountain Brook,” Smith said.
Boone said he was “honored” by the decision.
“What sets Mountain Brook apart from other communities is its long-term vision and planning, the leaders’ willingness to listen to managers and employees, and the respect and appreciation they show for our efforts daily,” he said. “City employees take immense pride in their work and service to the community; that dedication is evident daily. As an employee, you cannot ask for more than to feel respected, valued, and empowered to make a difference.”
