Mountain Brook girls, boys continue to dominate state tennis

The Mountain Brook girls tennis team was in a tight spot.

The 32-time state champion Spartans girls team lost a Class 6A state championship second round doubles match to St. Paul’s and coach Susan Farlow thought the steak of six straight titles might end.

A quick check of the math and Farlow figured the Spartans would have to win every remaining match to capture the championship.

They did.

Mountain Brook squeaked by St. Paul’s 72-69 to earn the championship and add to its domination.

“This is a great group of seniors, five senior girls,” said Farlow, who has coached the girls and boys teams for the past 17 seasons. “I think they maybe got a little bit nervous in some of these matches, but what I love is that they are competitors. They had been a part of three state championship teams and being champions, they knew that and they just got out there and played.”

The boys team also won the title, dominating by scoring 84 points to second-place Hartselle’s 39. Boys competitors won to every singles and doubles final match, taking five of six singles and all three doubles.

The girls title came down to the doubles finals with Mountain Brook’s No. 1 team of Pippa Roy and Annie Lacey and No. 2 Ann Coleman and Mae Mae Lacey.

The Spartans and St. Paul’s were tied 66-all for the team title going into the doubles finals with each win adding three points to the team total. St. Paul’s won at No. 3, which put the pressure on Mountain Brook’s two doubles final teams.

No. 2 doubles Coleman and Lacey split with Northridge’s Kate Thom and Alexandra Salekin 6-2, 2-6, setting up the super tiebreaker, which means the first to 10 points with a two-point margin wins the match.

Mountain Brook’s No. 1 doubles team was cruising to an easy win with a 6-1 first set victory and leading the second set 4-0. The match was on the adjacent court to the No. 2 doubles final and all four players in the No. 1 doubles match wanted to watch the excitement so they stopped the match to see the end of the No. 2 doubles final.

Coleman and Lacey led the super tiebreaker 9-7, but Northridge tied it 9-all and the teams continued battling point for point until an 11-all tie. The Spartans won the next two points to earn the victory.

The final point punctuated the win.

“(Northridge) hit a really good cross court ball and Ann Coleman took off and got in the middle of the court,” Farlow said. “She hit an overhead with so much force I thought it was going to bounce over the fence. It was so great and then that was it.”

The win tied the team score 69-all with St. Paul’s and when Mountain Brook’s No. 1 doubles finished off its final set with a 6-0 win, the team title was secured.

Mountain Brook No. 1 singles and doubles Roy capped a spectacular career despite suffering her first high school loss. St. Paul’s Emma Jane Hamilton downed Roy in No. 1 singles semifinal action, marking the first loss in 36 matches. Hamilton went on to win the No. 1 singles.

Roy finished as a three-time No. 1 singles champion for the Spartans.

“She is a true competitor and we had been piggybacking off of her for three years because she was so steady,” Farlow said. “But we all know in sports that anything can happen.

“All I know is if she had not rallied, didn’t come back and partner with Annie and win the No. 1 doubles, it would have been a true tragedy. But it was a happy ending and I think a great lesson for all of us. Anybody can be beaten on any given day in tennis.”

The team win marked the second team state championship for the Lacey twins, Mae Mae and Annie, after helping the volleyball team to the Class 6A title in November.

Mountain Brook High School opened in 1966 while the first AHSAA championship for girls tennis was played in 1963 with Mountain Brook winning 33 of 61 championships. The boys first AHSAA championship was played in 1945 and the Spartans have won 28 of 79 titles.

Of those 61 total tennis team championships, Farlow has coached 18.

“What I’m really proud of, though, is that we have taken both teams to state every year,” Farlow said.
