Mountain Brook cruises past Woodlawn, Fairfield downs Jasper for 1st win

Mountain Brook needed only eight plays to score 35 first quarter points on the way to the 51-0 Class 6A, Region 5 victory at Woodlawn while posting its second straight shutout.

Seventh-ranked Mountain Brook (3-1, 2-0) led 42-0 at the half as the Spartans scored on every possession in the half against Woodlawn (0-3, 0-1).

In a statistical oddity, Woodlawn had 13 first downs in the half to only five for the Spartans, but three fumbles hurt the Colonels.

Mountain Brook’s Cole Gamble ran only four times, but scored three first half touchdowns with 131 rushing yards while Jack King scored twice on three runs for 60 yards. Stuart Andrews added a 13-yard run for the final touchdown of the half.

The Spartans rushed for 237 yards on 23 runs while holding Woodlawn 159 total yards.

Quarterback John Cooper was 6-of-8 passing for 60 yards, including a 14-yard scoring pass to Hudson Young.

The Spartans added a safety in the final quarter as Joseph Green tackled Micheal Givihan in the end zone.

Fairfield 34, Jasper 28

Fairfield scored late to earn its first win of the season in a Class 5A, Region 5 game at Jasper’s Ki-Ro Gambrell Field.

Justin Murray scored the game-winning touchdown on a 20-yard run with 6:48 left in the game, breaking a 26-all tie.

The score stayed close throughout.

Fairfield scored first when quarterback Ju’maria Hamilton found Jakorrion Bradley alone down the right sideline for a 19-yard scoring pass with 9:44 left in the first quarter. The drive was set up when Jelani Miller returned the opening kickoff 57 yards to the Jasper 23-yard line. Five plays later the Tigers (1-3, 1-1) had the lead.

Jasper (0-3, 0-2) got a 67-yard scoring run by Micah Pledger – 5-foot-9, 168-pound sophomore scored four TDs – with 7:23 left in the second quarter, but missed the point-after and trailed 7-6.

Fairfield’s Danzell Lambert grabbed a 10-yard pass from Hamilton in the corner of the end zone – Lambert’s fourth TD reception of the season – with 2:17 left in the second quarter for a 14-6 lead.

Jasper answered with another Pledger run, this one for 16 yards, with 1:25 left in the half. Jasper’s 2-point conversion failed and Fairfield led 14-12.

The Tigers struck back quickly as Hamilton hit Cade Austin on a 25-yard pass on the final play of the half for a 20-12 lead.

Pledger added a 3-yard run with 5:59 left in the third quarter for a 20-18 deficit, ending the opening drive of the second half, then gave the Vikings a 26-20 lead with an 8-yard run with 11:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Fairfield’s Hamilton accounted for his fourth score of the night, this one an 11-yard TD run with 9:17 left in the game, but the Tigers missed the point-after attempt for a 26-all tie.

That set up the game-winner from Murray.
