Mountain Brook basketball star Ty Davis picks Creighton

Mountain Brook basketball standout guard Ty Davis announced today he would play college ball in the Big East for the Creighton Bluejays.

The 6-foot-5, 175-pounder chose the Omaha, Neb., school over Oregon and Northwestern. The Class of 2024 combo guard who is listed as a three-star prospect by 247Sports, was an Alabama Sports Writers Association first-team All-State pick after his junior season. He was a Class 6A Player of the Year finalist, the All-Area team MVP and a member of the all-tournament team for both the Northeast Regional and the AHSAA finals. Davis is ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in Alabama by 247Sports behind Westminster Christian’s Chase McCarty.

Davis, the son of Mountain Brook head coach Tyler Davis, averaged 18.2 points per game for the Spartans last season. He averaged 6.0 assists and more than 4 rebounds per outing. Mountain Brook finished as the 6A runner-up, falling in the finals to Buckhorn, and finished at 26-8 on the year.

“I’m excited,” Tyler Davis said of his son’s choice. “He narrowed it down to three great schools with excellent pedigrees. Dana Altman at Oregon and Chris Collins at Northwestern were just great.

“Coach (Greg) McDermott at Creighton built a great relationship with Ty. Their whole staff did. Their style of play is great. Ty wanted to play in a Power 5 – I guess it’s Power 6 – conference and they play in the Big East, which is one of the best – if not the best – conferences in the nation.

“Creighton is like the only game in town there outside of the College World Series. They have an 18,000-seat arena and play in front of 17,000 every game. We actually visited last week in the middle of the World Series and had a lot of fun,” Tyler Davis said.

Basketball is understandably important in the Davis household. Both of Davis’ parents played college basketball at Samford University. Ashley Sharp Davis, Ty’s mom, scored the first points ever for the Samford women’s team and played from 1995-98 for the Bulldogs. Tyler Davis played there from 1994-98.

“Just growing up here with myself and my wife playing at Samford and coaching here with Bucky (McMillan) at Mountain Brook, basketball is all he’s seen,” Tyler Davis said. “He’s got a passion for the game. His dream was to play for a Power 5 level school and thankfully it worked out.”

Davis, a two-year starter who scored 11 points in a state championship win as a freshman for the Spartans, has scored more than 1,000 points headed into his senior season. In the offseason, he plays with the Pro One Basketball Club. He was chosen to play in an Under Armour Top 60 event at IMG Academy with Pro One, set to begin July 6.

His performance with Pro One last summer sparked a lot of interest from college recruiters, Tyler Davis said.

“Since June 15 of last year, he’s had like 17 schools calling him,” Tyler Davis said. “A lot of people were on him with a lot of interest from high major schools. He played very well in tournaments in Phoenix and Rock Hill, S.C. and started to draw attention.”

Creighton finished 24-13 last season, losing 57-56 in the Elite Eight to San Diego State, the eventual national runner-up to Connecticut.
