Mother now charged with endangering Alabama infant who died; father faces new charges
More charges have been filed against the parents of a Winston County infant who died one week ago today.
Shannon Lee Stewart, a 33-year-old Double Springs man, was already charged with capital murder in the Dec. 30 slaying of his 2-month-old daughter Amasia Faith Stewart. He now faces eight new charges: one count of sexual assault of a child less than 12, two counts of willful abuse of a child, three counts of chemical endangerment and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
And Amasia’s mother, 24-year-old Brittany Scoggins, is now charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of chemical endangerment and failure to appear. She was taken into custody Jan. 3.

Amasia was taken by ambulance to Lakeland Community Hospital in Haleyville on Dec. 30. Winston County Coroner Tracey Holley pronounced the infant dead at the hospital.
No additional details have been released.
“She was the perfect baby,’’ her mother, Brittany Scoggins, told AL.com in an interview the day after her daughter died. “She was so happy, always smiling.”
“In compliance with an order which has been set forth in this investigation, the Winston County Sheriff’s Office is restrained from making extrajudicial statements in all regards except for the basest of facts,’’ Sheriff Caleb Snoddy said a Facebook post.
“I ask that everyone please be kind in respect to the families of the victims, the law enforcement officers, and many others involved in the sphere of this investigation,’’ the sheriff said.
