Mortimer Jordan crushes rival Gardendale

Everything worked for Mortimer Jordan’s offense on Friday night at Jimmie Trotter Field.

Senior quarterback Garrett Ames threw four touchdown passes, running back Terence Gaines scored four touchdowns, and receiver Coleman Maldonado caught two long touchdown passes as the Blue Devils (3-0 overall, 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 5) earned a 58-21 victory over Gardendale.

Mortimer Jordan scored on all five first-half possessions to take a 38-21 halftime lead and then scored touchdowns on three straight drives in the second half to pull away.

The Blue Devils defense also forced four turnovers, intercepting Gardendale quarterback Mac Beason three times and recovering a fumble in the second half.

Gardendale (0-3, 0-1) has allowed 50 or more points in back-to-back games.

Did you know?: Gardendale is 0-3 to start the season for the first time since 2009.

Key sequence: Gardendale scored twice in the final minute of the second half to cut the deficit to 38-21 and got the ball to start the second half. The Rockets quickly went three-and-out, but recovered a Mortimer Jordan fumble four plays later.

For a moment, it looked like the Rockets had all the momentum.

But on the first play after the fumble recovery, Beason threw deep down the right sideline and Mortimer Jordan’s DeAngelo Williams intercepted it. Gardendale never seriously threatened again.

Big turnaround: Mortimer Jordan lost a fumble on the opening kickoff, and Gardendale needed just two plays to score for a 6-0 lead. Mortimer Jordan then scored on its next four possessions to build a 24-6 lead.

Stat sheet: Gaines logged 23 carries for 182 yards, with TD runs of 17 and 2 yards and TD catches of 15 and 17 yards. … Maldonado caught seven passes for 210 yards, with TD catches of 45 and 78 yards. … Ames finished 12-for-22 passing for 277 yards. … Gardendale quarterback Mac Beason threw TDS passes of 26 yards to Caiden Combs, 11 yards to Logan Fitzgerald and 8 yards to Jacoby Quates.

Wild end to first half: The teams combined to score three touchdowns in the final minute of the first half – Maldonado’s 45-yard TD catch and Beason’s TD passes to Fitzgerald and Quates.

What’s next?: Mortimer Jordan plays at Parker on Thursday. Gardendale is idle next week before playing Parker at home on Sept. 22.
