More winter weather advisories possible for Alabama
Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories will go into effect for parts of north and west Alabama as soon as tonight.
Parts of northern Alabama could see 2 to 5 inches of snow and some ice from tonight into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
But what about the rest of the state? Don’t think that because you’re not under a winter weather warning at the moment that you are in the clear.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said it will likely need to add more winter weather advisories in the future to include some counties farther south that could see impacts by Monday night. Those could come later today or early Monday.
Forecasters on Sunday morning said: “It does not take much ice with these cold temperatures to create problems.”
Forecasters said the general thinking is that a rain and wintry mix will move through the Interstate 59 corridor Monday night and reach just north of Interstate 85 by Tuesday morning.
Forecasters cautioned that areas that get snow, or ice — even just a little — could have to deal with slick roads and hazardous travel with very cold temperatures hanging around for a few days.
Here’s the ice accumulation outlook for central Alabama:
“Bottom line is, icy travel conditions can be expected by Tuesday morning everywhere except the Interstate 85 corridor southward, and will have to closely watch the freezing line as it approaches the I-85 corridor,” the weather service said in its Sunday morning forecast discussion.
“With temperatures dropping into the 20s overnight, travel will quickly become hazardous with moisture on roadways plus the additional light freezing rain/freezing drizzle/sleet beginning to freeze.”
Temperatures are expected to be cold, very cold, especially on Tuesday into Wednesday. Anything frozen that falls could stay put. Or, if temperatures rise above freezing during the day, frozen precipitation could melt, then refreeze overnight, making for icy spots.
