More severe storms threaten Alabama this Memorial Day weekend: What to know

Another chance for a few severe storms is now in the forecast for Alabama, and it will be over the Memorial Day weekend.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk for severe storms on Saturday, mainly Saturday afternoon through the evening.

A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible. The strongest of those could have wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail and heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said a complex of storms, or mesoscale convective complex (MCS), could move into Alabama from the northwest on Saturday, although the details on exactly when and were are still murky at this point.

The Level 1 risk area, which could change between now and Saturday, stretches from Florence and Decatur in north Alabama to the southeast as far south as Montgomery and Auburn.

The Huntsville area, which got hit especially hard during a round of severe weather on Tuesday, as of now is not on the Level 1 risk area. However, cities such as Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Gadsden and Talladega are.

No severe weather is expected in south Alabama, but there will be chances for rain and storms on Saturday.

The weather service mentioned that there could be additional threats for severe storms on Sunday and Monday (which is Memorial Day), but confidence on that happening was low at this point.
