More people are moving to Alabama, U-Haul says
Alabama was one of two states that saw the largest jump last year in a metric of how many people are moving in.
Alabama is 20th among the states in U-Haul’s Growth Index, a number that analyzes how many people are moving in and out.
According to the national moving chain, people arriving in Alabama in one-way U-Haul trucks fell 1% from 2021, while departures fell 5% as overall moving traffic slowed.
Last year, Alabama was ranked 46, and only Virginia, ranked 5th in 2022, could match the state for a jump that large. Texas maintained its hold on the top spot for the fifth straight year. California was ranked dead last for the third year in a row.
U-Haul says do-it-yourself movers arriving in Alabama accounted for about 50.3% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic in and out of the state. Departures accounted for 49.7%.
Alabama’s top growth markets are the Auburn-Opelika area and Huntsville.
Other net-gain cities included Foley, Fairhope, Tuscaloosa, Pelham, Daphne, Dothan, Cullman, Decatur, Enterprise and Troy.
The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled according to the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a city or state, compared to those departing, in a calendar year. More than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck transactions occur annually across the U.S. and Canada, according to the company.
