Montgomery riverboat captain: Selma boaters caused problems long before brawl

The captain of Montgomery’s Harriott II riverboat said he has had trouble in the past with the same group of people involved in last weekend’s now-notorious riverfront brawl.

“This is a group that comes up from down river, from Selma,’’ Capt. Jim Kittrell told CNN Primetime. “They come up every year and they park the boats, and they go have fun downtown.

“And we have a couple of years ago, we came back from the cruise to get the — our golf cart that we used to get people up the hills that are handicapped or elderly,’’ Kittrell said.

“And we get back and the golf cart is gone. We don’t know where it is.

“Well, eventually, we get a call from the hotel and — Embassy Suites Hotel, and they say, hey, man, your golf cart is in our lobby,’’ the captain said. “So, we go down there and get the golf cart and we see the video. Find out who it is.”

Kittrell said police were called but they did not press charges.

“The police said, hey man, you know, just a little prank. Just let it slide,’’ Kittrell told CNN. “I said, okay. So, we let it slide.”

The fight broke out Saturday evening as the Harriott II was trying to dock after a cruise but could not do so because a pontoon boat was in the way.

The riverboat captains used a PA system to try to address the situation, but to no avail.

Eventually, Co-Captain Damien Pickett and a 16-year-old deckhand-in-training went to the dock and a melee followed as punches were thrown, all caught on multiple cell phone videos.

“When the first guy hit him, I said oh, my God, and he threw his hat up. I said, no, no, we got problems. And then another guy got involved. Three more guys — three or four more guys came running down the dock,” Kittrell said.

“I said, thank God they’re going to stop this, but they didn’t stop it. They jumped in as well….And then this violence escalates.

“You — you know, watching this, people immediately thought, just because of the racial dynamic in particular, obviously, here, they saw a group of White men attacking a singular Black man, who was struck looks like first,” Kittrell said.

So far, four people have been charged: Mary Todd, 21, third-degree assault; Richard Roberts, 48, two counts of third-degree assault; Allen Todd, 23, one count of third-degree assault, and Zachery “Chase” Shipman, 25, one count of third-degree assault.

All charges are misdemeanors and all four have been booked.

Pickett, a Black man, along with a 16-year-old White young man, were victims in the fight. All of the suspects charged so far are white.

CNN Primetime asked Kittrell if he thought the incident was racially motivated.

Montgomery police officials have previously said they consulted with the FBI and state prosecutors and said the cases did not meet the criteria of a hate crime.

The 16-year-old victim’s mother in a police report said a racial slur was used during the brawl.

“But, you know, I saw it like everybody else saw it. It looks like White people attacking a Black man. I thought that. I felt that. I felt — I felt that was the case, what everybody is thinking,’’ Kittrell told the network.

“But, you know, I don’t know the hearts of those men. I have no idea what’s in their hearts. Now, I do know the hearts of my crew. And my crew was, like, frustrated, because they couldn’t get to the dock, and protecting him,’’ he said.

“So, I know that was — that’s what was going through their mind because that’s what was going through mine.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Kittrell’s full interview with CNN Primetime can be seen here.
