Montgomery police officer injured during foot chase; suspet held without bond

A Montgomery police officer was injured during a foot chase on Saturday night.

The incident happened about 7 p.m., according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, while the officer was working on a detail with the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, also known as MACS.

ALEA Lt. Jeremy Burkett said officers on the detail tried to stop a vehicle near the 1000 block of Eastern Boulevard when someone got out of the vehicle and ran away.

A foot pursuit ensued.

Burkett said an officer was taken to Jackson Hospital for injuries sustained during an assault. The nature of the assault and the severity of the officer’s injuries were not disclosed.

The suspect, 31-year-old Edward Burns, was taken into custody. He is charged with second-degree assault and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.

Burns is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center.
