Montgomery mayor waives some fines for municipal court convictions
Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed signed an executive order on Thursday waiving most unpaid municipal fines and fees incurred from minor municipal convictions before January 1, 2014.
The order takes effect on April 5.
“The current system of collecting fines, fees and costs for municipal convictions can create an undue financial burden on individuals and families,” the executive order said.
“Such financial burdens can disproportionately impact low-income residents and communities of color, potentially leading to a cycle of debt and incarceration.”
The order also calls for alternative sanctions and payment plan options.
“For all convictions on or after Jan. 1, 2014, the mayor encourages the municipal court to consider the use of alternative sanctions, such as community service, restorative justice programs, and educational courses, in lieu of fines, fees and costs for individuals demonstrating financial hardship.”
