Montgomery man jailed after allegedly killing dog with crossbow
A Montgomery man is facing animal cruelty charges after he allegedly tied his husky mix to a tether and fatally shot the dog with a crossbow before dumping the husky’s remains in a river, according to court records.
Charles David Graves, 62, was arrested last Wednesday on first-degree cruelty to a dog or a cat, according to the case filed against him Monday in Montgomery County District Court.
The Montgomery Humane Officer Division received a call from a resident of the Cedar Park neighborhood of Montgomery last Wednesday around noon alleging her neighbor shot his dog with a crossbow and that the incident was captured on video from their development’s security cameras, according to the complaint against Graves.
Several deputies met with the witness and park maintenance personnel from the development to review the footage.
The video, authorities claimed, showed Graves retrieve a crossbow from his vehicle before firing several shots at nearby trees as his dog runs around.
Graves then allegedly put his husky mix out on a tether as another dog belonging to him stands beside him.
The dog then begins to run toward the bottom of a boat ramp when Graves returns to his vehicle, takes out the crossbow and shoots the husky mix, the complaint alleged.
Graves then allegedly dragged the dog to the top of a hill before pushing the dog into Gun Island Chute, a river that feeds into the Alabama River, court records claimed.
“The shot by the crossbow resulted in the death of the dog…,” the complaint goes on to say.
Montgomery County jail records showed Graves remained held in the lockup on $2,500 bond.
Graves faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the charge.
