Montevallo man charged after police chase linked to I-65 crash that killed 2 people
A Montevallo man has been charged after authorities say he led police on a chase before he crashed in the backyard of a Calera home.
The driver, authorities said, is one of two men who led law enforcement officers on pursuits Saturday night. The other man was killed in a crash on Interstate 65 in Pelham.
Jose Miqueas Rios-Romero, 22, is charged with attempting to elude, reckless endangerment and DUI, according to court records made public Monday.
He is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $97,000 bond.
Charging documents against Rios-Romero state he was seen traveling 90 mph in an area zoned for 45 mph. Alabaster police initiated their lights and sirens, but Rios-Romero did not stop and went on to run a red light at the intersection of Highway 87 and Smokey Road.
Rios-Romero continued fleeing, ultimately ending up in Calera. He lost control of his vehicle on George Roy Parkway near Nottingham Drive.
The vehicle ended up in someone’s backyard, damaging a guardrail and a citizen’s privacy fence and AC unit.
The suspect fled on foot and was ultimately caught hiding in bushes and arrested by a Calera officer approximately a half mile from the crash scene, said Calera Police Chief David Hyche.
The suspect refused medical treatment and was turned over to Alabaster police.
Rios-Romero was one of two drivers pursued in Saturday night’s incident.
Authorities have said Rios-Romero and 21-year-old Elias Trejo Andino were both fleeing police when they split up.
Rios-Romero headed toward Calera and Andino got on I-65.
Alabama State Trooper Vu Quang said Andino was attempting to elude Alabaster police officers, Shelby County sheriff’s deputies and ALEA state troopers.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the chase was still ongoing when authorities say Andino crashed into a Nissan Altima driven by 22-year-old Tyrek Howard of Helena.
Howard was not involved in the chase.
After the initial crash, Andino’s Camaro overturned, and Andino, who was not using a seat belt, was ejected.
Howard’s Altima left the roadway and struck several trees. Also not using a seat belt, Howard, too, was ejected.
Both Andino and Howard were pronounced dead on the scene.
A passenger in Howard’s car – 22-year-old Jazmine A. Davis of Montevallo, was taken to UAB Hospital with critical injuries.
The deadly crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. on I-65 northbound at mile marker 243, near the Cahaba Valley Road exit.
ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe.
