Moms for Liberty Madison library event with Kirk Cameron, Riley Gaines draws protests
The Moms For Liberty event at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library on Saturday morning drew protests, according to social media and news reports.
The library system announced Thursday that the event would not be held because of space concerns. On Friday, however, the library agreed to accommodate the event with with a limit of 225 attendees.
Actor-writer Kirk Cameron appeared along with former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, who has spoken out against trans woman Lia Thomas competing in NCAA events.
The Democratic Socialists of America in North Alabama shared pictures of protesters gathered on the road outside the library.
Fox News, citing Cameron’s publisher, Brave Books, reported there were about 100 protesters outside the library.
“Thank you for coming to an event that is so wholesome like this, that is so faith-filled like this,” Cameron said, Fox News reported.
Moms for Liberty was formed in Florida in 2021 by three former school board members who were upset about COVID-19 school restrictions.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the “parents’ rights” groups as extremist.
