Mobile’s Mardi Gras is ‘community-owned,’ Carnival museum curator says

Cartledge “Cart” Blackwell has worked as the curator of the Mobile Carnival Museum since 2018. A native of Selma, Blackwell is an art and architectural historian who serves on Mobile’s Architectural Review Board. He is the author of “Of people and of place: Portraiture in Alabama, Reconstruction through Modernism (1870-1945)” published in 2020.

The Mobile Carnival Museum opened in 2005, and it is one of only a few museums in the world dedicated to Carnival. The museum has 14 galleries and artifacts from Mardi Gras in Mobile and around the world.
