Mobile road rage murder trial ends in hung jury — again
For the second time in less than a year, a Mobile County jury has failed to reach a verdict in the murder case of 35-year-old Trenton Davis Thornton, who is accused in the shooting death of a man during a road rage incident in February 2020, the district attorney’s office confirmed Friday.
“We are disappointed to hear the jury’s decision, but as always respect their decision and appreciate their service,” said Jennifer Susman, Chief Assistant District Attorney for Mobile County, adding the DAs office will try the case a third time, with a June 4 date already set.
Roughly nine months ago, Thornton’s first trial resulted in convictions for shooting into an occupied vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident, but the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the murder charge.
On Feb. 4, 2020, Mobile police responded to the area of Gulf Field Drive just after 10 p.m. on a report of a gunshot.
Investigators learned 35-year-old Patrick Edwards and his wife had been involved in a traffic accident, but the other driver — Thornton — had fled the scene. Edwards followed Thornton to the Gulf Field Drive area, where Edwards left his vehicle to confront Thornton, who prosecutors say fired multiple shots, killing Edwards.
Thornton’s lawyers have argued he acted in self-defense when Edwards approached him on the dead-end street.
