Mobile police fatally shoot armed man seen standing on roof of a house, police say

A man is dead after a shootout with Mobile police Monday morning, according to the Mobile Police Department.

Police responded to a residence on Glenwood Street shortly after 7 a.m. following a report of a man on the roof of the home.

Two Mobile officers responded to the scene and talked the man off the roof, but once on the ground the man pulled a sawed-off shotgun with a pistol grip, Mobile police chief Paul Prine told WKRG at the scene.

The man “pointed it at officers in a manner to shoot,” according to the release from MPD.

Both officers drew their weapons, and fired multiple rounds at the man, striking him an unknown number of times. The man died at the scene and was later identified by Mobile police as 24-year-old Christopher Jones.

James Barber, Chief of Staff from Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, along with Mobile District Attorney Keith Blackwood and police chief Paul Prine were all at the scene, according to the TV report.

The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave pending completion of investigations into the shooting by the Mobile Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit and the Mobile District Attorney’s Office, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, according to the department.
