Mobile police arrest teen in shooting of 6-year-old
A 19-year-old Mobile man has been charged with assault in a shooting which left a 6-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds.
Mobile police announced Wednesday they had taken Zaire Titnamus Hughes into custody, charging him with 1st-degree assault and firing a gun into an occupied building.
He remained in Mobile Metro Jail as of Thursday afternoon, pending a Friday morning court appearance.
Police responded to the Summer Place Apartments on Azalea Road about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday after a report of a shooting. At the scene, they found the child inside an apartment, suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.
The child was transported to a local hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries. The child was immediately taken into surgery and, as of Tuesday afternoon, was listed in critical, but stable condition.
In the immediate wake of the shooting, Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine said the attack was not random, but the child was not the target.
Information on who may have been the target or Hughes’ relationship to that person, or the child, has not been released. Mobile police said Thursday morning there would be a press conference later in the day, but that press conference was cancelled a few hours later.
