Mobile officer placed on leave after video shows him beating handcuffed man during arrest

A Mobile police officer has been placed on administrative leave and an investigation is underway after a video shows the officer beating a handcuffed man during an arrest last week.

According to the Mobile Police Department, officers conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Dauphin Island Parkway and Halls Mill Road about 5:41 p.m. last Thursday.

Officers on the scene detected the presence of marijuana and asked both the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle.

The driver, identified as 36-year-old Beezer Earl Dubose Jr., was arrested on charges of speeding, assault, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.

Although police have not confirmed, it’s presumed Dubose is the man seen in the video with the officer, since the unidentified passenger was not taken into custody.

Initial court filings say that as he was being placed under arrest by Mobile officer Paul Callegari, Dubose grabbed Callegari’s “testicles and penis and twisted them, causing serious physical pain.”

Dubose was taken to Mobile Metro Jail and later released after posting $16,800 bond.

A statement from Mobile police said the Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting “a thorough examination of all aspects of the case.”
