Mobile no longer listed as “second most dangerous city in the U.S.”

Mobile is no longer listed as the second “most dangerous city in the United States,” according to MoneyGeek.com, after the city of Mobile worked with the FBI to correct erroneous crime data.

Earlier this year, Mobile made headlines after MoneyGeek published a list of the “most dangerous cities in the U.S.” using data from the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Mobile was ranked second in the country, behind only St. Louis, Missouri.

City officials quickly disputed that claim, and yesterday, city of Mobile officials announced that the record has been corrected: Mobile is no longer listed as the second most dangerous city on MoneyGeek’s list. In fact, it’s not even in the top 15.

A note on the MoneyGeek website states that the list was updated on May 25 after the FBI data was updated.

According to a release from the city of Mobile, the city and the FBI transitioned to a new system for reporting crime data in 2022. A software glitch caused Mobile’s crime statistics to be artificially inflated.
